The Wedding Game - Opening Film Of World Comedy Film Festival!

Local box office hit, The Wedding Game, has done Singapore proud by being selected as the opening film of the inaugural World Comedy Film Festival, to be held in Bangkok from 10th - 16th June 2009. The movie’s director, Ekachai Uekrongtham and reel/real starring couple Christopher Lee & Fann Wong will be gracing the movie’s Gala Premiere during the festival’s opening night. The Wedding Game was released in cinemas in Singapore and Malaysia during Chinese New Year 2009 and enjoyed a successful run at the box office in both countires. The movie’s rights for Thailand have been acquired by established distributor Sahamongkolfilms and are targeting a theatrical release after the festival. It's now available locally on home video.

Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance

HOME PREMIERES IN SINGAPORE ON WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Shaw Organisation and Singapore Environment Council (SEC) have partnered to present the Charity Gala Premiere for HOME, a feature film directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, on 5 June 2009. Proceeds from the premiere will go towards SEC awareness and action programmes for year 2010. Narrated by Glenn Close, a five-times Academy Awards® nominee, HOME will be premiered in Singapore on World Environment Day, 5 June 2009. After the Premiere, there will not be any regular session at the cinemas.

SPRING FEVER WINS BEST SCREENPLAY AT CANNES

The Chinese film SPRING FEVER by Director Lou Ye won the Cannes Festival's Award for Best Screenplay on Sunday, 24th May. Awarded at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, and chosen by a jury headed by French Actress Isabelle Huppert, Director Lou Ye (who also helmed the critically acclaimed Summer Palace in 2007) accepted the prize on behalf of his writer, Feng Mei. Lou shot the sultry movie in secret over two months and told AFP at the film festival that he hoped "to be the last Chinese director ever to be banned, that no one else suffers this." "My films cannot be viewed in China," he told AFP. "My producers are trying to have the ban lifted because it is senseless." Filmed in Nanjing city, the film was one of 20 movies in the running for the Palme d'Or. Lou used a hand-held camera to film actors whose characters become involved in a love triangle. SPRING FEVER is slated for release in the 3rd quarter of 2009.

MONSTERS VERSUS ALIENS 3D Premiere

Movie-goers can now enjoy watching 3D films at three Cathay Cineplexes in Singapore. Following a fast-rising, world-wide demand for 3D movies, Cathay Cineplex Cineleisure Orchard is Cathay Cineplexes’ third cinema outlet to see the inclusion of a world-class system for the screening of 3D movies in addition to The Cathay Cineplex and Cathay Cineplex AMK Hub. The new setup uses the Dolby® 3D Digital Cinema system to offer viewers a compelling visual and audio treat that completes their movie experience. Movie-goers can also expect more upcoming 3D releases at Cathay Cineplexes, such as Final Destination 4, G-Force, Coraline, Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs, A Christmas Carol and Monsters Versus Aliens on 28 May 2009.

Cathay Donates Digital Master Copies of Malay and Chinese Classic

Cathay Organisation is taking another giant step in preserving Singapore’s film and cinema heritage by donating the digital master copies of the company’s Malay and Chinese classic films to the Asian Film Archive. As a major player of Singapore’s Golden Age of cinema, this donation by the Cathay Organisation is a concerted effort to preserve a vital slice of Singapore’s film history spanning a twenty-year period of the 1950s to the 1970s. The 40 Malay films produced by Cathay-Keris Film Productions included in this donation feature works by legendary directors of their time such as Hussein Haniff (Hang Jebat) and B.N Rao (Laila Majnun) and starring stars like Latifah Omar, Siput Sarawak and M. Amin. The master copies of these films serve to complement the earlier donation in September 2007 of Cathay’s film print copies of its Malay classic films to the Asian Film Archive. Preservation of its films is not a new initiative by Cathay Organisation as Cathay has donated the film prints of its Chinese classic films to the Hong Kong Film Archive in 2004. By entrusting its digital master copies of over 120 Chinese classic film titles to the Asian Film Archive for long-term preservation, Cathay is further ensuring that these Chinese films such as Mambo Girl and Sister Hedy will be available for the enjoyment, appreciation, and research of future generations of film scholars and enthusiasts. The Asian Film Archive will oversee the archival preservation and cataloguing of these films. The digital masters of the films will be migrated in phases to a more commercially accessible format while the master copies will be preserved. The films will be stored in the secure and climate-controlled vaults of the National Archives of Singapore, archiving partner of the Asian Film Archive. The Asian Film Archive and Cathay Organisation have a variety of plans for this collection of films. For the general public, access to the films will be made available in stages via the Asian Film Archive’s Reference Collection at the library@esplanade. On a wider scale, there are plans to organize an academic conference for film and cultural studies scholars to discuss and analyze the place of these films in the wider film and historical context. Additionally, a publication on the Malay classic films featuring research papers, interviews, and other historical nuggets on the films is in the pipeline. In conjunction with these ideas, a traveling exhibition about the films will be curated, which
could potentially travel to both local and regional educational and film related institutions. Scholars and members of academia interested in participating and contributing to the conference and book publication can contact the Asian Film Archive.

Wedding of the Year

One of the most celebrated couple in our local TV industry Fann Wong and Christopher Lee were married in a simple ceremony on Saturday at the Shangri-la hotel. Mere mortals like us won't be invited to the wedding. But at least, you can taste a bit of the bliss in The Wedding Game now out on DVD.

Gianna Jun, lead actress of Blood: The Last Vampire, is coming to town on the 20th May, as part of a 2 day trip to promote this upcoming release film. She will be arriving in Singapore on Korean Air, KE641 at 9:20P.M. A celebrated artiste over Asia, the Korean actress is known by the name Jeon Ji-Hyun at home and in her earlier movies, the most notable one being My Sassy Girl (2001). Bumblebee In Cannes

LOVE LOST "失去愛"

Following three successful sold out screenings at the recent 22nd SIFF, Leonard Lai Yok Wai’s latest short film "失去愛" (LOVE LOST) had won the "SPECIAL AWARD" at the recently concluded Timishort FIlm Festival in Romania which was held from 6~10 May 2009. The Director previous full-length feature film The High Cost of Living had won the “Best Feature Film” prize at the 9th International Panorama of Independent Filmmakers in Greece in 2007. The short film features the director himself who is acting for the 1st time as the male lead. The talented Singapore singer Faith Yang – 楊馥蔚（楊孝芬) who was a part of the Regional duet ‘2 Gals’ (2個女生)” is the Female Lead. The film was filmed in Taiwan on a shoe-string budget and is partly based on the director’s real life experiences there. It tells the story of a relationship coming to an end between Wai and his girlfriend Faith, who is in Taiwan. Wai travels from Singapore to Taiwan to meet Faith for one last time. It is a last journey of past memories as he finds shadows of their love and time spent together. The film is the 1st of a planned trilogy of short films exploring 3 different stages of love – losing love, finding love and maintaining love. Possibly the lowest rated horror thriller in our reviewing history, Amusement is about 3 longtime friends who share a horrific destination when a seemingly innocent incident from their school days comes back to terrify them. Red Sands follows the story of a group of U.S. soldiers who face a deadly supernatural force after they destroy an ancient statue. If you missed the theatrical run, the Mexican horror Hell's Highway KM31 holds the dubious honour of being the country’s highest grossing genre film. Check these thrillers out. Available at all good video retail stores and rental outlets.

No UP in June

Perhaps the most depressing news today, the Disney/Pixar animated UP will not be shown here in June. Instead it has been pushed back to 3 September. Hanna Montana The Movie on the other hand is scheduled to open on 4 June.
