SOLOS to be Represented Internationally by Lighthouse Pictures

Lighthouse Pictures is handling worldwide sales rights excluding Singapore for Solos which had recently been in competition at the 2007 Singapore International Film Festival. The film will be represented at this year’s Marche du Film (Cannes Film Market), at the Singapore Film Office (Riveria F9). Esplanade Georges Pompidou, from 16 to 26 May, 2007.

Solos marks Lighthouse Pictures’ first collaboration with the film’s producer Red Dawn Productions. The deal was brokered between Lighthouse Pictures’ Thomas Chia and Red Dawn Production’s Florence Ang.

Lighthouse Pictures has previously handled sales of a library of 200 films from Russia’s Intercinema XXI Century ( Intercinema Art Agency) at The Asian Television Forum/Asian Film Market held in Singapore. Formed in 2002 as a theatrical distributor, Lighthouse distributed arthouse titles like Meirelles City of God, Zvyagintsev’s The Return, Koreeda’s Nobody Knows, Van Sant’s Elephant, Kitano’s Zatoichi and also distributes specialty titles from MGM in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.
Chia said: "This is one of those films that transcends cultural and language boundaries about the insipidity of urban living. The lack of communication amongst the film’s characters was meant to inspire individuals to “open up” – to encourage improved communications between loved ones. Lighthouse Pictures is excited to help bring the film to the widest possible audience all around the world.”

A surrealistic portrayal of love’s selfishness, Solos narrates the fading relationship of a couple, and the love of a mother who fears her son will never return to her. The silence that dwells between the characters brings out their loneliness as they struggle with disappointment but are yet unable to share their true emotions. Singaporean filmmakers Kan Lume and Loo Zihan co-directed Solos, which was inspired by true events of a teacher-student relationship.

Solos received an R21 rating with 3 cuts from local censors for the Singapore International Film Festival. The film did not have a public screening during the festival but the local censors allowed the film to be screened uncut in front of the jury.
The decision to cancel the public screening was a joint decision between the producers and the organizers of the festival to preserve the principle that films at the festival should be shown uncut.

The film stars award winning theatre actors, LIM Yu-Beng ( Singapore Dreaming, Anna & the King, AD 2000) and GOH Guat Kian in her film debut. Director LOO Zi-han also wrote the screenplay and acted in the film. Sound design and music was composed by Darren NG, one of Singapore’s most respected and acclaimed sound artist.
Solos is produced by Florence ANG with Ricardo UNCILLA as Executive Producer, and Kan Lume as Co-Producer.

Producer Ang also manages a film publicity company Red Dawn Communications and was publicist for films – “ I Not Stupid Too, Singapore Dreaming, The Maid and Anna & Anna”.

Solos was shot on with a PANASONIC AG-HVX202 camera and edited on Grass Valley™ EDIUS HD from Thomson. The film’s running time is 78 minutes and has no dialogue.
