The Korean Remake of John Woo's A Better Tomorrow

Clover Films will be distributing the upcoming Korean action blockbuster A BETTER TOMORROW 《英雄本色》in Singapore. Directed by Song Hae-sung宋海星, starring Joo Jin-mo朱镇模, Song Seung-heon宋承善, A BETTER TOMORROW 《英雄本色》is the world’s first attempt to remake
John Woo’s successful classic film, A BETTER TOMORROW, released in 1986. A BETTER TOMORROW《英雄本色》tells the story of Hyuk (Joo Jin-mo) and Yung-chun (Song Seung-heon), who are practically brothers. They’ve been together for over 10 years and nothing can separate them. While they are good-natured guys they also traffic arms illegally from Thailand to Korea. Young-chun takes this risk for monetary reasons: cars, girls, booze. Hyuk, however, is trying to save enough money to buy someone out of North Korea. Hyuk and Chul (Kim Gang-woo) are real brothers. Hyuk, Chul and Young-chun are all from North Korea. They tried to escape together, but Chul got caught and was left behind. Their family was punished for this and their mom eventually died in prison. Hyuk can never shake off the guilt and Chul can never forget. Three years later Chul finally makes his way to South Korea. He becomes a policeman and advances rapidly among the ranks. During this time Hyuk tries to earn the trust and love of his younger brother, but abandonment and betrayal are hard things to forget. Things come to a head when Young-chun pulls Hyuk into doing one last gig for the gang. It happens to be the case that Officer Chul is in charge of. The three brothers meet again one final time.
The movie will release in Singapore on November / December this year.

DVD...DVD...DVD...DVD...DVD...

Directed by Chan Hing Kai and Janet Siu, La Comedie Humaine is about a Mainland Chinese hitman who ends up in Hong Kong with a film screenwriter. It is convenient to pass this movie off as one of the many disposable Hong Kong comedies, but trust us, if you are a fan of Chinese movies, then you will lap this up. It’s usually bad news when a sequel returns without its lead star, and even more so, if the lead star is one comedian called Stephen Chow. Mainland actor Huang Xiaoming took over Chow’s role as Tang Bo-hu in Flirting Scholar 2 and the result is simply painful. From Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant comes a hilarious and heartwarming new comedy about three friends who dream of breaking free from the mundane world of Cemetery Junction. With poignant and real life issues presenting itself in a fine script like that, it’s hard not to recommend this to today’s skeptical audiences.

What in the world happen to Orlando Bloom's supposedly surging career after the end of Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean? Other than news of him getting married, the once poster boy seems to have disapppear from the big screen. But fret not, Japanese casual wear chain Uniqlo has engaged him as a new brand ambassador for their upcoming Fall/Winter 2010 collection. At least the paychecks keep coming in. As we speak, Bloom is currently filming Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers due for release in April 2011.

Haunted Changi tops local box office on the first day of opening

Local horror movie HAUNTED CHANGI debuted in cinemas
yesterday with a strong box office showing of S$48,992 on the first day with 22 prints in Golden Village, Cathay, Eng Wah and Filmgarde cinemas islandwide.

The film was the number one film at most local cinemas yesterday, beating out fellow openers Vampire Sucks and Going The Distance, as well as holdover titles Grown Ups and The Expendables. Rarely have local independent films ever beat out major Hollywood films at the Singapore box office, given the significantly larger marketing and publicity budgets of the major titles.

Haunted Changi filmmakers commented, "We wanted to tell a story that all Singaporeans proudly say we own it. Old Changi Hospital is our very own famous haunted house. Small team, low budget with no big studios supporting it, no famous names. The big star is old Changi Hospital itself. Overseas markets are looking at how Singaporeans are supporting this movie. If we can support local films, we won't need to look for old castles or other people's Amityville Horror houses to find inspiration. Who knows, if HAUNTED CHANGI does well here, you may start seeing local films in Hollywood cinemas! This happy start to the box office is because of our fans. It's all because of you, thank you!"

Back to the Future-style Nike sneakers

According to Nickicks, Nike have filed patent papers for a shoe with an automatic lacing system, such as seen on the Nike Air Mag from Back to the Future II. For those who are too young to remember, one of the most memorable moments in the 1989 sequel has to be when Michael J Fox's character, Marty McFly, puts on a pair of Nike Air 2015 sneakers and the trainers automatically lace themselves. Perhaps in five years time, we will no longer see the need to teach the tots about tying shoe laces.
