Asian Superstar BoA starts production on new film COBU 3D

Production has begun on the dance love story COBU 3D, which is being directed and written by Duane Adler (screenwriter of two of the highest grossing dance films, SAVE THE LAST DANCE and STEP UP) and produced by Robert Cort (MR. HOLLAND’S OPUS, RUNAWAY BRIDE, SAVE THE LAST DANCE) and Korea’s CJ Entertainment and SM Entertainment. Making their feature film acting debuts, the film stars BoA, Asia’s leading performer and recording artist having sold more than 20 million records in Korea and Japan alone, and Derek Hough, the current reigning and three-time champion of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, who’s credits include the critically acclaimed starring role in Footloose: The Musical in London’s West End.

A fresh and energized take on the classic romance of star-crossed lovers set in the club-land of New York, BoA and Hough play dancers from different worlds whose Romeo-and-Juliet romance is threatened by the dangerous rivalry between their brothers’ competing clubs in New York City’s underground dance scene.

COBU 3D follows talented young performer Donny (Hough) as he heads to New York to join his brother Nick in running the city’s hottest club –a showcase for the next generation of explosive dancers from around the globe. Donny is blown away when he meets Aya (BoA), an elegant dancer whose sexy moves complement his own, and whose fusion of tap, hip hop and taiko drumming creates a style unlike anything he’s ever imagined. But Aya turns out to be the sister of Nick’s enemy, who owns the rival dance club. As Donny and Aya fall in love, the competition between the brothers intensifies: Donny must choose between the girl of his dreams and loyalty to his brother, and make real decisions for the first time in his life.

Golden Village Pictures is proud to be the distributor of COBU 3D. The film is slated for release in the first half of 2012. Golden Village Pictures is proud to be the Singapore distributor of COBU 3D. The film is slated for release in the first half of 2012.

The Watershed Election - Our miserable two cents

Congrats to the brave good folks of the Worker's Party for scoring a GRC and retaining the SMC. Not forgettting the 'slum' people of Hougang and Aljunied for being so united.

Pity the PAP lost such an intelligent, gracious Minister, Mr George Yeo - the right man in the wrong place. Ironically some undeserving people went in or are still around. We salute you!

Mr Chiam See Tong despite losing his seat in parliament after 27 dedicated years as an opposition deserved a National award or something. He is a FIGHTER and a protector of Singapore!

Rethink? Regroup? Replan? Now it's in the hands of the winners to layout our future for the next 5 years.

Summer is waiting and it's back to the movies for us!

Production Of 2359 Officially Commences

2359 stars Mark Lee (left in a MX file photo), one of Singapore’s most successful movie stars and comedian cum host. Producedby multiple award-winning director Eric Khoo and directed by Gilbert Chan, who also co-directed the movie, Love Matters with Jack Neo.

The title of the movie is inspired by the term “2359” which is commonly used in the army to represent the last minute before midnight. As the story goes, the creepiest time of the day is at the stroke of midnight, and whoever dies at that time will not rest in peace and their spirit will stay in the mortal world to seek revenge. 2359 is based on a true story that happened in Pulau Tekong in 1983. During his national service, Jeremy’s platoon mates started bizarrely dying one by one, and each time, an old lady always appears where the bodies are discovered. Jeremy starts an investigation into the deaths and the old lady, and discovers a dark and horrible secret of the island…

The movie is slated for theatrical release in both Singapore and Malaysia at the end of the year.

$20 mil and 7 months later, SHAW LIDO is finally open!

Last year, one of the most iconic cinemas in Singapore closed its doors for a $20mil makeover- and after a special preview of the new refurbished Shaw Lido, we're proud to say that the old dame is new once again, and has never been better. Instead of 8 halls, there are now a total of 11 halls (including the centrepiece IMAX theatre); and instead of 2,238 seats, there are now 1,960 seats (which also means more leg-space).

How does the new and old Lido compare? Well, for starters, the box office is right in front of the glass doors of the escalator leading up to Level 5. The area where the box office counters used to be and the benches in front of the giant screen in the lobby has been converted into the lobby where you can sit around on sofas while you wait for your movie to begin.

In terms of the cinemas, the giant Lido 1 has been converted into the IMAX theatre, and its upper floors now house Lido 2 and 3. The former Lido 2 has been renumbered Lido 1 and the new Lidos 1, 2 and 3 are accessible via the sixth floor.

Lido 4 occupies the former Lido 3, while Lidos 5 - 10 are in the former no-gradient halls of Lido 5 - 7 and Lido Classics. There is also an electronic board before the hallway leading to the various halls which tells you when the hall is ready for seating. Of these 10 halls, 6 are digitally equipped with RealD 3D, the best 3D projection technology short of the IMAX theatre.

But of course, the biggest attraction is no doubt the first and only IMAX theatre in Singapore! Boasting laser-aligned digital sound, optical image sensors, and an immersive theatre geometry (the screen is curved and titled towards the audience), it promises to revolutionise the movie-going experience by allowing audiences to fully enjoy how filmmakers want their movie to be seen. The IMAX theatre has a seating capacity of 421 for a 2D presentation, and 319 for a 3D presentation (the seats at the side will be blocked off to ensure an optimum viewing experience).

IMAX 2D movies are priced at $20 and $17 on peak (Fri-Sun and PHs and eve of PH) and off-peak (Mon-Thu) respectively; while 3D movies will cost $22 and $19. If you're wondering what the extra cost is for, it goes into the process of converting the standard print by Digital Remastering into an IMAX DMR format. 3D projection is also done from two  projectors (one for each eye), unlike the standard 3D presentation in regular halls from just one camera. Trust us on this one- the IMAX 3D is superb and amazing!

The 10 regular halls will open on 5 May 2011, while Lido IMAX will open on 19 May 2011 with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in IMAX 3D. Other upcoming IMAX titles include Kung Fu Panda 2, Super 8, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Welcome to a new era of cinema-going! For more opening promotions, check out http://bit.ly/lpFl9C. Have a great time at the new Shaw Lido!

In addition, the Houston Film Critics Society gave Special Mention to Eric Mabius and Laura Ramsey for their work as the lead actor and actress in Where The Road Meets The Sun.

"We started the evening hoping for one good award and went home with three top honors and more mentions than we could count. It was a wild ride that my team and I didn't expect and it felt great to be a big winner! We are very happy and very thankful that the Houston Int'l Film Festival and the Houston Film Critics Society have been so generous with their validation of our work," says Director Yong Mun Chee.

Julio and Guy hustle for day-to-day survival and forge dreams of a better future, but after Julio steals Guy's passport and sells it, not only is their friendship at stake but also their lives. What follows are the wild times and often gut-wrenching adventures of four men trying to survive both emotionally and physically.

At fortysomething, straight-laced Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the dream-good job, nice house, great kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart. But when Cal learns that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his "perfect" life quickly unravels. Worse, in today's single world, Cal, who hasn't dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth. Now spending his free evenings sulking alone at a local bar, the hapless Cal is taken on as wingman and protégé to handsome, thirtysomething player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). Does the cinematic world needs another JOHNNY ENGLISH?

Red Dragonflies Flies To Filmgarde's Illuma Cineplex

Liao Jiekai's award winning Red Dragonflies has been travelling the world since its World Premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival last year in March, and it's finally coming home to Singapore for a local screening. The Singapore Premiere will be on 14 April Thursday at the Southeast Asian Film Festival held at the Singapore Art Museum, with the director in attendance for a Q&A session, but it's already sold out.

Those unable to get tickets for that screening, fret not. Red Dragonflies has also scored a theatrical run exclusively at Filmgarde's Illuma cineplex at Bugis from 5th May 2011, which I believe marks the first time that a 13 Little Pictures produced film is getting a release in a mainstream commercial cinema.

Do lend your support to a homegrown film screening at a homegrown cineplex!

The new A CHINESE GHOST STORY makes us miss Leslie...

Announcement Of New Movie Project - The Wedding Diary

Clover Films, Golden Screen Cinemas, Mega Cineplex and Asia Tropical Films are pleased to announce their collaboration on a new
movie project - The Wedding Diary 《结婚那件事》. The Wedding Diary is a fun and witty parody that attempts to make a mockery of the entire wedding process in a light-hearted and comedic manner, from the chaotic wedding preparations involving more family members than one would wish to, to the topsy-turvy giddiness of the actual event, the faux pas of the wedding guests, and more!

The Wedding Diary is directed by Adrian Teh (郑建国) with screenplay by Rebecca Leow (洪汐), and brings together popular local and regional artistes, with Malaysian singer-actor Aniu (阿牛-陈庆祥) and Hong Kong’s up-and-coming singer-actress Elanne Kwong(江若琳)taking on the lead roles as the prospective couple. The supporting cast will be announced shortly.

The Wedding Diary tells the story of a couple, Wei Jie and Tina (played by Aniu and Elanne Kwong respectively), who decides to get married. Wei Jie is an engineer working in Singapore, who comes from a humble Hokkien Malaysian family, while his wife-to-be Tina, comes from a well-to-do Cantonese Singaporean family. What follows the happy decision to tie the knot is a series of problems involving both families - the disparity in perceived wealth and the countless differences between Singaporean and Malaysian, Hokkien and Cantonese cultures, such that preparations for the wedding almost comes to a standstill. In a show of sincerity and commitment to his demanding parents-in-law to be, Wei Jie agrees to hold an extravagant and lavish wedding banquet in Singapore. On the wedding day, Wei Jie discovers that most of the red packets he has planned to use to foot the bill have gone missing! Out of desperation, he heads to the nearby casino to try his luck and ends up losing more money. As he makes up one lie after another to cover up his problems, Tina starts to have suspicions about his fidelity and honesty. He quarrels with his father over the wedding arrangements and in a pique, his father leaves Singapore only to meet with a car accident on the way back to Penang. The happiest day in Wei Jie’s life is suddenly unfolding into what could be the most depressing… or is it?

The Wedding Diary will be filmed in Singapore and Penang, Malaysia. Production of the movie will commence end-April 2011, with its theatrical release slated for November 2011 in Singapore and Malaysia.

Shaw Theatres brings a 3-storey high IMAX screen

Singapore's first and only IMAX featuring digital technology has finally arrived at Shaw Theatres Lido, marking a significant milestone in the local cinematic history. The IMAX screen was unpacked, raised, stretched and installed yesterday in a customised theatre built to meet requirements necessary to deliver The IMAX Experience.

IMAX’s proprietary high-gain screen results in exceptionally bright images and unparalleled 3D effect. The IMAX screen is slightly curved and sits closer to the audience, creating a larger effective screen, which is equivalent to a 20% to 230% increased in screen area. It was a delicate process to install the 170kg 3-storey high IMAX screen as it cannot be bent, to avoid any kink or scratch, so that a complete The IMAX Experience can be realised.
The screen was hoisted through an opening made in the curved facade of the Shaw House earlier in the week. It was packed in a 10m long crate, weighing a total of 454kg, and hoisted up 5 storeys to Shaw Theatres Lido. When installed, the 19m (width) by 9.5m (height) screen effectively fills from floor to ceiling and wall to wall.

The installation of the entire IMAX hall will take at least another 11 days. This will be followed by a series of tuning and testing. Closed for renovation since October 2010, the new Shaw Theatres Lido will feature 10 regular cinema halls and Singapore’s first IMAX hall to feature digital technology. It is slated for opening in mid-May 2011.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE IS KATNISS EVERDEEN in "THE HUNGER GAMES"

The filmmakers of “The Hunger Games” are pleased to announce that Academy Award® nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence will assume the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games”. The film will be directed by Gary Ross. Collins’ best-selling novel, which has over 3 million copies in print in the United States alone, is the first in a trilogy of science fiction/action novels which have developed a global following. Cathay-Keris Films will release “The Hunger Games” in Singapore in March 2012.

Newcomer Lawrence’s meteoric ascent began in earnest with her breakout role in last year’s “Winter’s Bone,” and culminated in an Academy Award nomination. This summer, Lawrence will star in Matthew Vaughn’s “X Men: First Class”.

“The Hunger Games” chronicles a dystopic Capitol which requires its twelve subjugated districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl, forced to participate in the annual “Hunger Games”, a fight-to-the-death live televised event. Katniss Everdeen’s little sister is chosen in the lottery to participate and Katniss volunteers to take her place. Although persevering through hardship is commonplace for Katniss, she must start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love in order to win the games and return home.

Anyone Seen Takuya Kimura?

Of course you have, on other websites or media but as requested by the local distributor, we are not allowed to feature graphical images of Takuya Kimura (the man known for his wacky Gatsby ads and one fifth of the immensly popular SMAP) on the poster, stills and trailer even though he is the leading star of his latest movie, SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO. Perhaps this is a clause laid down by his overprotective Japanese management or the company holding the original rights. Whatever the reason, this will only hurt the sales of this space epic feature and isn't it ironic when you have a hot selling face for your product onhand and you can't use it at all. Pity.

An ensemble romantic comedy, LOVE IN SPACE is the follow up to the directing team’s box office hit, HOT SUMMER DAYS. WORLD DEBUT OF WHERE THE ROAD MEETS THE SUN

Local Director Yong Mun Chee’s debut film Where The Road Meets The Sun is confirmed in the Official Selection for The 44th Annual Houston International Film and Video Festival in Houston, Texas, 8 – 17 April 2011. This will mark the World Premiere screening for the independently produced title. Where the Road Meets the Sun is also nominated to receive a prestigious REMI award at the Houston Film Festival, which will be given out at The Grand Awards Gala on Saturday April 16, 2011.

Where the Road Meets the Sun is a movie about four men whose lives intersect for a brief time in the city of Los Angeles. Takashi, a Japanese hit man, wakes up from a four-year coma and moves to LA to escape mysterious traumatic memories. He strikes an unusual friendship with Blake, the hotel manager who still mourns the loss of his wife to an affair he ended up regretting. Julio, an illegal immigrant, works at an Indian restaurant to provide for his wife and kid back in Mexico. He befriends Guy, a young British backpacker who lives off his estranged father's ATM card and sleeps with any girl who crosses his path. The film intercuts between the blossoming of these two friendships. Takashi attempts to help Blake break from his past, but in the process is forced to confront his own violent memories. Julio and Guy hustle for dayto-day survival and forge dreams of a better future, but after Julio steals Guy's passport and sells it, not only is their friendship at stake but also their lives. What follows are the wild times and often gut-wrenching adventures of four men trying to survive both emotionally and physically.

Written and directed by Yong Mun Chee, the film stars Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty), Will Yun Lee (Hawaii Five-0; The King of Fighters), Luke Brandon Field and Fernando Noriega. Golden Village Pictures is proud to be the Singapore distributor for Where the Road Meets the Sun. The film will be released in June 2011, with the Asian premiere held during the first-ever Screen Singapore.

Gary Winick 1961 - 2011

Director/Producer Gary Winick who gave audience the recent Amanda Seyfried's Letters To Juliet, Anne Hathaway's Bride Wars, Dakota Fanning's Charlotte's Web and Jennifer Garner's 13 Going On 30 has passed away. While you might not necessary be a fan of the man's movies yet his most enduring legacy is likely the one he left on a smaller community, the thousands of filmmakers who have and will continue to benefit from his work as a digital pioneer at the turn of the century as the founder of InDigEnt, the collective he created with Cinetic's John Sloss and IFC Films to make films for under $100,000 on digital video.
